Four Things Fathers Do That Hurt Them In a Custody Case

Fathers deserve to be in their children’s lives. Even if they only get visitation on a regular basis, they deserve to spend time with their children because studies have shown that children whose fathers are involved in their lives are happier and more successful. They are also less likely to do drugs and commit crimes.

However, a father often has to prove himself above and beyond mothers in order to win custody cases. There are many things that they often do which will hurt them in court. Here are some things to avoid if you are suing for custody.

  • Move out of your home. Many fathers move out of the family home during a separation or a divorce. However, if you are able, you should stay so that you can show the judge that you have as stable home.
  • If you have to move out, be cautious where you go. A court will want to make sure that your children have a safe place to live so it is important that you find an apartment or home in a good area. You also need to make sure that you keep it clean.
  • Struggle with your job. It is important that you keep your job in order to win custody of your children. The judge is going to want to make sure that your children are going to be well taken care of and if you can’t keep a job, you are not going to be
     able to support them.
  • Many fathers do not fight the mothers, even when the charges are exaggerated. However, it is important that the court hears the true story so that you get a chance to be
in your children’s lives. Too many fathers feel like they have no chance before they even get started so they give up.

Fighting for your children can feel like a losing battle though it is worth it. However, you have to be
careful how you act during the separation and divorce. Try to continue to live in your home or, if you have to move out, find a safe place. Also, you need to keep your job so that you look as stable as possible for your children.
