Tips to Prepare For Your Divorce From an Experienced Family Law Attorney

Making the decision to divorce is difficult and extremely sad. You never envisioned that your marriage would end, so you may feel alone and confused and not really know where to start. As attorneys experienced in family law, we certainly understand, and would like to provide you with some tips when you're getting ready to begin the divorce process.

Before You Meet With Your Attorney

Before you meet with your attorney, there are some important documents you should gather.

To start, get together copies of all credit card statements, bank statements, loan documents, pay stubs, tax returns and other important documents that detail all of your debts and assets. If you own separate property, collect the documents that prove separate ownership.

From there, open a new bank account in your name, and make sure your paycheck is redirected into that account. You'll still need to disclose the account information, and you may still need to use those funds as part of your divorce process, but this protects your funds from being spent by your spouse.

You may also want to maintain a private email account so you can privately communicate with your attorney. If your spouse has access to any social media accounts, make sure to change your password and remove any incriminating photos, and don't post things about your situation or your spouse.
